EXPLORING SWITZERLAND'S GRINDELWALD - DAY 4 Jungfrau above the clouds

So this is embarrassing, this blog took way too long. Construction at home, work, covid etc. It all didn’t help. However all is done and finished, sort of. There are two more blogs of Switzerland coming up, including this one -or- when I feel like it I just dump it all in one blog. One to rule them all.
This one is a short one as it was all about getting to the top of the Jungfrau. It did not seem to be a successful day when I woke up and looked outside. It was still grey and damped weather, so not ideal at all. At least it was dry so that was a good thing. Packed up all essentials and headed out. As you can see, once in the funicular it all started to be more and more exciting as the clouds where really low and it did not take long to pass the clouds and end up in a wonderful fairy tail landscape.
Taking the second train towards the very top through the mountains was also exciting and it brought me in a hour at the absolute top! And boy it was standing on top of the world. Clear blue skies, snow, glaciers and overall a crisp and cold environment. You could feel the ice particles in the air. However the sun was blasting so there was no need for thick clothing. Even better!
The early morning was the most impressive with the sun hitting the mountains giving it all the cold blue, white and orange tones in the snow and rocks. I loved it! One thing…. don’t forget you polarization filter like I did. It makes a huge difference! Wondering round the landscape and heading out to a mountain hut a few kilometers away from the main area. There are two actually, the second one you can reach with a guide and takes better part of the day, so I took the other one. Still due to the high altitude and up hill hike it was still quite challenging, but taking it easy will get you there.
After all that goodness it was time to head back. I took a detour and walked down towards Wengen to finalize the day. As there was enough time to still do a short hike. Be carefull though, the last trains and busses leave around 17-18h. So I actually had the last train back to Grindelwald. Pfew, that was close. However the next day I would not be so lucky. You can read that in the last blog, the most epic day of hiking for me in the mountains every, not because of difficulties, but just the amount of kilometers walked. Stay tuned!
For now I leave you with some of the shots of that day, mainly on top of Jungfrau, highly recommended! All shot with the Sony A1 and Sigma combo! Don’t hesitate to leave a comment or drop an e-mail. Click to view larger in a light box and navigate with mouse or arrow keys. Enjoy!
