A well deserved time off with the two of us exploring the forest and hiking trails in the Achterhoek in the Netherlands. I never visited this part of the country that specific and let me tell you I loved it. It has a diverse landscape, forest and vegetation more so than over here or at the Veluwe. We got our first Red kite (rode wouw) and a Green woodpecker (groene specht) that flew with us along the car, which was very cool to see.
We explored a few different locations in the area of Winterswijk. A specific one the Winterswijk - Wooldse Veen reserve was a special one. A peatland area with water, swamp area, trees, bushes etc. A perfect place for birds of all sorts and there we saw the most diverse of species. A Red kite, Green woodpecker, Black woodpecker, yellow-hammer, Meadow pipit and more. A real treat and surprising hike because when we started the hike it looked like a dud, with nothing to see. So there you go, sometimes just take a chance.
As I said we visited multiple forests and nature areas in the region and I can really recommend staying there for at least a few days. Drive from forest to forest, look out for Green woodpeckers and birds in the grasslands. Also enjoy the sunsets in these wide vistas as they can be pretty impressive as you can see.
I’ll leave you with the photos as there was just hiking in the general area and not much more to say actually. So there you go. All shot with the Sony combo! And don’t hesitate to leave a comment or an e-mail. Click to view larger in a light box and navigate with mouse or arrow keys. Enjoy!
